Leading Questions.

Voting Question:

“Would you vote for Bill Smith, a man known to accept questionable campaign contributions? (YES/NO/UNSURE).”

Clearly, this is a blatantly leading question because it loads any survey taker to be significantly negatively disposed to Bill Smith.

Other leading questions are slightly more subtle. Look at these two possible ways to ask the same question.

School Safety Bill Question:

(1) “Do you support the School Safety Bill, a bill that will coordinate local and federal law enforcement and provide funding to place important security checks at the entrance to every school, ensure sufficient police presence in the most dangerous schools, and provide professional psychological intervention in dangerous and difficult student situations? (YES/NO/UNSURE).”

(2) “Do you support the School Safety Bill, a bill that will unnecessarily divert millions of dollars from hiring the best teachers, reducing class size, reducing health care costs to millions, and providing economic stimulus to the region? (YES/NO/UNSURE)”

The same essential question is asked two different ways, leading those who are polled toward a particular answer.

The following question, although more neutral, expects a particular answer.

Emergency Medical Technician Question:

“Don’t you agree that Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) should receive more pay for their first-responder service? (YES/NO/UNSURE).”

The phrase “Don’t you agree” expects a positive answer. A more neutral question might me worded like this:

“Do you believe EMT’s pay is higher than it should be, lower than it should be, or just about right?”

This last question’s wording encourages people to make up their own mind, instead of encouraging a particular answer.
